Expression Lines

Lines that appear when you move your face, and lines that stay.

About this concern

Lines that become more noticeable with facial movement may respond differently from lines present at rest. The distinction matters because it changes what is worth discussing. A line that appears when you frown or raise your eyebrows and disappears when your face is still is largely about muscle activity. A line you can see in the mirror without moving at all has usually also involved a change in the skin itself — its thickness, its elasticity, the sun it has had over the years. Many faces have both, in the same place, to different degrees. Assessment considers muscle activity, skin quality and the change you want to achieve, and part of it is deciding how much movement you would rather keep.

Why the causes differ

  • How often and how strongly the area moves — the forehead, between the brows, around the eyes.
  • Whether the line is still visible when your face is completely at rest.
  • Skin thickness and elasticity in that particular area.
  • Cumulative sun exposure, which affects the skin rather than the muscle.
  • Previous injections in the area, and how your face responded to them.

Questions worth asking at your consultation

  • Is this line coming from movement, from the skin, or from both?
  • How much of my natural expression would change, and is that reversible?
  • What happens if I do nothing — does it get harder to treat later?
  • Which lines on my face would you not treat, and why?
