Neck Lines & Skin Laxity

The neck ages on its own terms, and is often left out of the routine.

About this concern

Changes in neck texture, lines and firmness need an assessment that distinguishes skin concerns from deeper structural factors. The skin on the neck is thinner than on the face and has less support beneath it, which is why it often shows change earlier than people expect — and why it is the area most commonly left out of a daily routine and out of sun protection. Horizontal lines across the neck, a crêpey texture and loose skin along the jaw are three separate observations with three different explanations, and only some of them are about the skin at all. What is appropriate depends on which it is, and a treatment aimed at skin quality will not address laxity that is coming from underneath it.

Why the causes differ

  • Whether the concern is texture, a line, or loose skin — these are not one thing.
  • Sun exposure on an area that is usually left out of sun protection.
  • How much the neck is flexed through the day, including time looking down at a screen.
  • Skin firmness, and whether what is loose is skin or something deeper.
  • Weight change, which shows in this area more readily than in most.

Questions worth asking at your consultation

  • Is what I am seeing coming from the skin, or from structure beneath it?
  • What is realistically improvable here without surgery, and what is not?
  • Should the neck be treated alongside the face or on its own?
  • What should I be doing daily for this area that I am probably not doing?
