Does Under-Eye Filler Treat Every Type of Dark Circle?
A shadow caused by a hollow is different from pigmentation or puffiness. Understanding the difference helps explain when filler may be relevant.
The under-eye area can look darker or more tired for several reasons. Although filler is often mentioned as a solution, it is relevant to only some of them. The most useful first step is to identify what is creating the appearance.
Hollows and shadows
A hollow between the lower eyelid and cheek may create a shadow. A suitable filler can be considered for selected cases of under-eye hollowing, after assessment of the lower eyelid, cheek and surrounding tissues. This does not mean that every hollow needs to be injected.
Pigmentation and puffiness
Dark circles can also relate to skin colour, visible vessels, skin changes or swelling. Adding volume does not directly address all of these causes. In a person prone to puffiness, an injectable approach may be unsuitable or require particular caution.
Why previous filler matters
Tell the clinician if you have had injections in the area before, especially if there is persistent swelling, unevenness or a change in colour. Bring product details and dates if you have them. Another injection should not be treated as an automatic top-up.
What should the consultation cover?
The assessment should establish whether a hollow is the main concern, explain the proposed product and alternatives, and discuss recovery and risks. Bruising or swelling may occur, and less common complications can be serious. Sudden visual symptoms, severe unusual pain or concerning skin colour changes after filler require immediate medical attention.
A better question than “Do I need filler?”
Ask: “What is causing the appearance under my eyes, and which option addresses that cause?” A suitable plan may involve an injectable approach, a different form of care or no procedure.
